About this session

Today's undergraduates are not the students most faculty were trained to teach. Students are navigating mental health, belonging, academic preparedness, AI, digital literacy, and economic uncertainty — while faculty are being asked to improve outcomes without lowering rigor. This intensive helps instructors align their teaching practices with what we know about student learning, engagement, persistence, and success in today's higher education environment. Participants will explore policies and practices that support student achievement while creating learning environments where students feel challenged, supported, and connected.

Participants will explore

  • Syllabus design that communicates clarity, purpose, and support
  • Selecting textbooks and course materials that increase access and engagement
  • Literacy practices that support learning across disciplines
  • Assessment strategies that promote growth and meaningful learning
  • Grading policies that align with course outcomes and student success
  • Creating classroom cultures of collaboration, belonging, and academic excellence
  • Navigating artificial intelligence and emerging technologies in higher education
  • Practical approaches that can be implemented immediately

Participants will leave with

  • A revised or newly designed syllabus
  • Strategies to improve student engagement and persistence
